Abu Dhabi Darb: Toll Guide for Rental Drivers
By Superior Car Rental
Driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi means planning for Darb, Abu Dhabi's road toll system. If you have searched for “Abu Dhabi Salik timing”, Darb is the system you need to check. It is separate from Dubai's Salik, and the charging schedule is not the same at every gate.
For a rental, settle two questions before leaving: which gates your journey crosses, and how the rental company will bill those crossings. A low advertised daily rental rate tells you neither.
Darb gates, prices and charging times
The following schedule was checked on 9 October 2026. Times are local to Abu Dhabi, which shares Dubai's time zone (UTC+4).
| Gate | Location | Chargeable times |
|---|---|---|
| Sas Al Nakhl | Sheikh Zayed Bridge | Monday–Saturday, 7–9 am and 3–7 pm |
| Al Maqta | Al Maqta Bridge | Monday–Saturday, 7–9 am and 3–7 pm |
| Rabdan | Musaffah Bridge | Monday–Saturday, 7–9 am and 3–7 pm |
| Al Saadiyat | Sheikh Khalifa Bridge | Monday–Saturday, 7–9 am and 3–7 pm |
| Al Qurm | Wahat Al Karama Street, at the entrance and exit of Sheikh Zayed Street | 24 hours a day, seven days a week |
| Ghantoot (also written Ghantout) | Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road, Ghantoot | 24 hours a day, seven days a week |
The toll is AED 4 per chargeable crossing. The four bridge gates are free outside their charging windows, on Sundays and on official public holidays. Al Qurm and Ghantoot operate around the clock; do not apply the bridge-gate exemptions to them. See Abu Dhabi Mobility's fee schedule and Q Mobility's gate and timing details.
Al Qurm and Ghantoot began operating on 4 May 2026. The dated Abu Dhabi Media Office announcement confirms their AED 4 charge and 24/7 operation. Older guides describing only four gates miss this change.
Does a renter need a Darb account or tag?
Darb identifies vehicles by number plate; it does not require a windshield tag. Registration and payment are linked to the vehicle owner. Q Mobility's registration FAQ says you cannot register a vehicle you do not own in your own account.
Before driving a Dubai rental into Abu Dhabi, ask the rental company to confirm that the actual vehicle is registered and ready for Darb crossings. If the car is replaced at handover, check again for the replacement. Having used Salik in Dubai does not answer the Darb question.
Keep the billing arrangements in writing. Ask how crossings are itemised, whether an administration charge applies, when the bill arrives, and how to query a crossing outside your rental period. These are rental-agreement details, separate from the official gate tariff.
A simple Darb budget
There is no daily or monthly toll cap to rely on: Abu Dhabi Mobility confirms the caps were removed.
For illustration, six chargeable crossings × AED 4 = AED 24 in Darb tolls, before any rental-provider charges. That means six qualifying passages, not necessarily a visit to all six gates. It is an arithmetic example, not a route estimate or a Superior quote.
Build your own estimate from the journey you intend to make. A hotel-to-attraction return journey may use a different set of roads from the outbound trip, and extra stops can change the count. Check the planned route in both directions, then allow for changes rather than assuming a fixed round-trip toll.
Keep Dubai tolls, Abu Dhabi tolls and parking as separate budget lines. For the Dubai part of your journey, our Salik guide explains the separate system; confirm current tariffs with Salik before travelling.
Before you drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi
- Confirm the trip with the rental company. Check permitted use and your total mileage allowance, including the return drive and local travel.
- Check the vehicle's Darb registration. Resolve this before leaving, with the company that owns or supplies the car.
- Review each route and gate. Do not assume an evening or Sunday trip is toll-free. Compare any alternative route's distance and travel time as well as tolls.
- Agree the billing method. Ask for the official toll and any provider charge to be distinguishable on your bill.
- Keep handover and return records. Record the plate, dates and times so you can check later toll charges against the period you had the car.
The official exemptions have specific vehicle and eligibility conditions. Do not assume a personal exemption automatically applies to a rented car; ask the provider to verify the vehicle's status.
Checking a toll charge after your trip
If an amount looks unfamiliar, request the crossing date, time, gate and vehicle plate, plus a separate explanation of any administration charge. Compare those details with your rental records. Ask the provider to investigate discrepancies rather than trying to add its vehicle to your own Darb account.
